Galesburg, Illinois

May 2006

My friend Tom and I traveled to Vermillion, South Dakota and on the way happened on the town of Galesburg, Illinois, birthplace of Socialist Carl Sandburg and boyhood home of Republican Ronald Reagan. Galesburg is also a major Midwest railroad hub with over 130 trains running through the town daily.

We stopped at the Sandburg Birthplace museum and at the Galesburg Railroad Museum.

Sandburg and his wife are interred under this rock in the meditation garden.

There is a stone path around the garden with lines from Sandburg's poems.

A seldom seen view of the interior of the steam train's firebox.
